A Passion for Freedom

This concert celebrates the inspiration that Burns’ poetry has provided to the African-American orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass; the Bengali poet and social reformer Rabindranath Tagore; and Tayisa Khryplyva, the Ukrainian teacher who is keeping the spirit of Burns alive for children in war-torn Ukraine.

Letters to the Author presents dialogues between original composers/ performers and later re-interpreters.
The program features music by Joni Mitchell, Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina, Cecile Mclorin Salvant, Burt Bacharach, Benjamin Britten, John Coltrane, and more, with arrangements that bring out the dialogue between the original creator and interpreter.
